Californium is a synthetic, highly radioactive actinide, first produced in 1950 by bombarding curium with alpha particles. It does not occur naturally and is made in small amounts in specialized nuclear reactors. Its isotopes, particularly ^252Cf, are used as neutron sources, in nuclear research, and in industrial and medical applications like neutron radiography and cancer therapy.
