Copernicium is a synthetic, highly radioactive transactinide, first synthesized in 1996. It does not occur naturally and is produced in particle accelerators by bombarding lead-208 with zinc-70 ions. Its isotopes are used exclusively for scientific research, primarily to study superheavy element chemistry and nuclear properties.
