Fermium is a synthetic, highly radioactive actinide, first discovered in thermonuclear explosion debris (1952 “Mike” test). It does not occur naturally and is produced in minute amounts in high-flux nuclear reactors or nuclear explosions. Its isotopes are used exclusively in scientific research, particularly for studying heavy-element chemistry.
