Flerovium is a synthetic, highly radioactive transactinide, first synthesized in 1998. It does not occur naturally and is produced in particle accelerators by bombarding plutonium-244 with calcium-48 ions. Its isotopes are used exclusively for scientific research, mainly to study superheavy element chemistry and nuclear properties.
