Meitnerium is a synthetic, highly radioactive transactinide, first synthesized in 1982. It does not occur naturally and is produced in particle accelerators by bombarding bismuth-209 with iron-58 ions. Its isotopes are used exclusively for scientific research, mainly to study the nuclear and chemical properties of superheavy elements.
