Nihonium is a synthetic, highly radioactive transactinide, first synthesized in 2003. It does not occur naturally and is produced in particle accelerators by bombarding bismuth-209 with zinc-70 ions. Its isotopes are used exclusively for scientific research, mainly to study superheavy element chemistry and nuclear properties.
